About Us
Since its inception in 1997, inthinc has focused its efforts on developing solutions to positively impact driver behavior. At the heart of this unique approach is the groundbreaking safe driving system, which mentors drivers to help them be better, safer and more efficient. Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, inthinc’s global efforts have been proven and documented to dramatically improve driver behavior, reduce crashes, increase fleet productivity, improve fuel mileage and reduce emissions.
Many of the world’s most safety-conscious organizations from NASCAR®, to multi-national companies, to families with teen drivers have turned to inthinc.
History
The company, initially known as Independent Witness Inc. (IWI), created its first product called Witness®, a sophisticated crash data recorder designed for the insurance industry to help address the estimated $40 billion loss per year due to fraudulent claims. In 2001, following the tragic death of Dale Earnhardt, NASCAR® mandated crash data recorders and installed the Witness in every race car and truck. This solution proved to be a prominent factor in NASCAR’s quest to create the safest environment possible for the sport. This relationship continues today and has helped shape the design and engineering decisions leading to innovations such as SAFER barriers, the HANS® device and ‘The Car of Tomorrow’.
In 2006, the company recognized the impact its experience in recording and analyzing crash data could have on improving driving safety and fleet efficiency. This led to a major paradigm shift that included renaming the company as inthinc.
The company made the transition from using its technology to simply record crash data to focusing on the driver. This created an entirely new market: driver behavior monitoring and mentoring. While a great deal of effort has been put into making vehicles safer to reduce the effects of a crash, inthinc is focused on leveraging technology to avoid the crash altogether.
The single greatest variable in crashes is the driver. By mentoring the driver to change and sustain positive behavior, companies and individuals can take a more proactive approach to driving safety. This realization has resulted in broad commercial success and has introduced a new way to address automotive safety.
Today, inthinc continues to develop innovations such as waySmart and tiwi, with applications for fleets, small businesses, families and motorsports.
